Amber Rhein is an artist and printmaker currently residing in Baltimore, Maryland. Originally from the Hudson Valley in upstate New York, her work focuses on topics of environmentalism, family, and human interactions within everyday life.

Amber received her BFA in Printmaking from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore where she also has a specialization in Book Arts, Graphic Design, Sustainability and Social Practice. Amber's work has been in exhibitions throughout Baltimore and the United Kingdom and she is featured in catalog publications by both Paul Laidler and Cynthia Nourse Thompson. She is in the collections of the Maryland Institute College of Art, the University of the West of England in Bristol, UK, and Dolphin Print and Press in Baltimore. Currently, she is working as a letterpress printer for Gilah Press and Design in Baltimore.

Professional Experience

2020- Package Design & Letterpress Printing, Pyramid Atlantic, Hyattsville, MD. An advanced two day intensive workshop that combines both graphic design and letterpress printing. Students will be designing a cohesive suite of objects and then printing them using both the Vandercook and Tabletop presses. Topics covered in this course include multi-layer printing, die cutting, printing on non conventional objects, digital file setup, and printing with photo-polymer as well as wood type.

2017-Present- Letterpress Printer & Designer, Gilah Press + Design, Baltimore, MD. Responsible for daily production and maintenance of the studio using most efficient and environmentally conscious techniques possible. Operated a Heidelberg windmill press, Chandler and Price press, along with other various machinery. Constantly problem solving printing issues between digitally designed media and its hand printed outcome to make sure every product is not only legible but of the highest quality for our clients.

2017- Co-Curator, “Everything Considered, Everything Included, for the most part” Printmaking juried exhibition at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Rosenberg Gallery, Baltimore MD. Co curated exhibition that investigates the modern definition of a print through the lens of printmakers. Co wrote the essay that accompanies the exhibition and designed the announcement card.

2017- Curatorial Affairs Intern, Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD. Internship with Ann Schafer, Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings & Photographs. Duties included working on an upcoming exhibition at the museum of Stanley William Hayter and Atelier 17 group. Specifically focusing on the exhibition catalog and gathering research and organizing data for the Hayter family tree and bibliography.

2016- 18th Century Paper Workshop, Print Media course, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD. Conducted a one day intensive workshop with the Introduction to Traditional Print Media students in the paper mill at MICA and produced authentic cotton rag paper used for printing in the 1700's in Europe.

2016- Teaching Assistant for the Introduction to Traditional Print Media Class, Eva Wylie Baltimore, MD. Responsibilities: Studio maintenance, demonstrations, assisting students with assignments, facilitating critiques along with the professor.

2016- Workshop Instructor at Camp Success, Baltimore, MD. A month long weekly workshop teaching children eight to fourteen years old the process of linoleum carving and relief printing. Responsibilities also included facilitating field trips to the Reginald F. Lewis Museum and the Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore.

2015-2016- Archiving Assistant for the Globe Press Collection, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. Helped organize 20,000+ posters and 2,000+ woodcut archives within the JHU Special Collections Library. Assisted with creating a database to catalog the physical attributes of each collection. Maintained proper handling and storage techniques with archival materials. Curated a separate collection of materials with unique qualities to be used for a teaching collection at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

2015- Studio Internship: Globe Press, Baltimore, MD. Assisted in printing commissioned event posters and teaching summer workshops for MICA’s summer pre-college program. Responsibilities included assisting in screen printing and letterpress printing, creating new merchandise for the studio to sell at events, assisting with public studio events throughout Baltimore.

2013- Teaching Assistant at Art Box Studio, Pine Bush, NY. Weekly art classes for children aged four to eight years old. Worked with studio owner Rebecca Cornell in facilitating classes, set up, and post class clean up. Students learned basic drawing and painting techniques and included larger group projects such as mosaic making.
